Thanks again Aaron
Here are some more findings from my location: host avg ping traces through www.eyedea.com.au 50ms Vocus netvantage.com.au 55ms Vocus/alter corporateinteractive.com.au 36ms optus digitalpacific.com.au 38ms sisgroup/alter.net anchor.com.au 50ms Vocus/alter.net www.websitemanagers.com.au 38ms sisgroup/alter.net tpg.com.au 37ms tpgi (?) magikhosting.com.au 43ms vocus/alter.net neubreed.com.au 36ms sisgroup/alter.net crucial.com.au 52ms asianetcom sphinx.techservers.com.au 38ms vocus/alter.net I'm afraid I don't know enough about routing and peering to know what this data even means - all I know is that ping values were 35ms ish and now they're 50ms. The table seems to indicate *some* vocus sites are pinging slower than sisgroup, optus and tpg. Are you able to check the sites above from where you are and see if you get the same differentiation? I did some downloading tests this morning and those speeds seem to be fine - from the Telstra servers I get 310Kb/sec and from my server I get 286Kb/sec. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do! John G :-) |

I'm not sure I understand the question - do you mean am I pinging from my computer to my VPS, or am I pinging using Putty to the other sites?
I've just been pinging using a DOS prompt in windows, and tracerouting using PingPlotter. Here's the same sites pinged from my VPS: host avg ping traces through ping from putty Eyedea - Creative Design, Web Development & Software - IDEAS THAT WORK 50ms Vocus 2.7ms netvantage.com.au 55ms Vocus 8ms corporateinteractive.com.au 36ms optus 1.6ms digitalpacific.com.au 38ms sisgroup/alter.net 3.2ms anchor.com.au 50ms Vocus 2.4ms Website Managers - make the internet work for you! 38ms sisgroup/alter.net 2.9ms tpg.com.au 37ms tpgi (?) 4.2ms magikhosting.com.au 43ms vocus/alter.net 1.2ms neubreed.com.au 36ms sisgroup/alter.net 1.6ms crucial.com.au 52ms asianetcom 0.5ms Doesn't seem to be any pattern there... Also the slower pings seem to be not isolated to my VPS, crucial.com.au and 203.98.88.34 are running at 50ms instead of 35ms too. I'd expect 50-60ms if I was pinging Melbourne or Brisbane - there's no chance things are being routed elsewhere or something? (Pardon my insane level of ignorance...) :-) |

Can you please provide traceroutes for each of the above results?

You're a dang genius Weller!

Why? Because I didn't reboot my modem. It must have been caching routes or something like that. I rebooted it, got a new IP and now I'm getting 32ms to my server which is quick as. Sorry for all the trouble Aaron - you can get back to your real work now! jbng :-)
