Default Network Outage - 17/Mar/09 - 2:16PM AEST

As some customers have noticed we experienced a network outage starting at 2:16PM AEST today, which has since been resolved. The outage effected a number of our servers, including our main website.

The cause of the issue was due to a power outage effecting a number of racks at Equinix. As a result of the outage, one of our upstream providers lost connectivity to multiple (3) network providers which resulted in a network outage on our end.

We are currently looking into ways we can prevent this from happening in future.

On 17/Mar/09 at 2:16PM AEST we experienced a loss of network connectivity to our Australian network.

The cause of the outage was due to approximately 15-20 racks losing power within the Equinix datacentre. One of our upstream bandwidth providers had their 3 network carriers racks go offline due to this power outage. As a result we network connectivity.

Power was restored to the racks at approximately 3:44PM, at which point our servers were immediately contactable.

Power outages of this kind are very rare, and we have not yet experienced one to this magnitude in our 5 years of providing hosting services.

We are looking into potentially adding additional carriers and peering to our current carriers to ensure further resilience to our network.
