Default Upgrading VPS

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question but just confirming....

If I buy a Linux VPS 4096 and my client's business suddenly explodes, upgrading to the 8192 would be a relatively quick exercise yes? From my previous experience it only took a matter of 15min but I'm just dotting my i's and crossing my t's

In fact....If I start on the 512 for example while the site is being built, I could upgrade just as quickly when it goes live?

Yes, it is a fairly trivial process upgrading to a new VPS plan, if there is capacity on the server you are on then it is usually just a quick reboot. If there is no capacity on the server you are on, then there may be short migration to a new node.

How much down time is there in upgrading from a VPS to a dedicated server?

Hi Ash,

Depends a lot no the application/srevices you have running on the server. In many cases it can be done with no downtime if planned correctly. Keep in mind if you are on an unmanaged service, you will be responsible for transferring the data. If you require us to assist you, you will need Full Management on both the VPS and the Dedicated Server.

Aaron,

Thank you for the prompt reply.

So am I right in guessing that it's not a case of upgrading the server (moving the xen image to the dedicated server and increasing the resource allocation) but it's actually renting another server and starting again?

Ash

Hi Ash,

Yep, that is correct. If you like, you can setup virtualization on the dedicated server, and we can provide you with an image to set it up - which might save you some time. However you will still need a new IP address.

Would a RAM upgrade improve my sites performance in terms of the speed pages are being loaded up?

At the mo im on 512 windows vps... but google webmaster tools reckon that my homepage takes 9.5 seconds to load so i wanna know if theres anything i can do to improve this.

M&MFitness,

Are you using all of your RAM? You can check this by logging in through SSH and typing "top" at the prompt. If you have little or no memory available then an increase could help things along.
