R1Soft Backup Solution for Windows VPS Customers

*** This product will soon be released to our Linux VPS customers as well ***

We're very excited to announce the release of the R1Soft CDP (Server Backup Software and Continuous Data Protection from R1Soft for Windows and Linux) backup solution for use on our Windows Virtual Servers. We've put together a short Q&A regarding the product and we encourage all customers to either upgrade their current solution (mounted backup space IF purchased) or to purchase R1Soft backups if you have not already got a backup solution.

Have a quick think about how critical your data is, can your business run without it? What is your backup strategy? If you don't have a strategy it's probably time you considered one.

Q) Do I have any backups?
A) We run RAID 10 on all of our VPS Nodes and while this is a form of redundancy it is NOT a form of backup so unless you have purchased backup space and run your own backups there is no backup of your data.

Q) What Makes the R1Soft backup solution better than the current solution that I have?
A) Our current backup solution for Windows VPS is mounted backup space on a NAS server, you still need to configure your own backups using 3rd party software and there is no web control panel. R1Soft is a complete backup solution with a web based interface, daily backups, 7 recovery points, file level restore as well as bare-metal restore. Additionally we offer an Advanced option for $20/Month/VPS.

Q) What is this advanced backup option?
A) The R1Soft backup software runs once daily and 7 restore points are kept. Some people may want greater control over when and how often backups are taken and this is what the Advanced option provides you. You can choose when, how often (as low as 15 minute increments) as well how many backups restore points are kept.

Q) I currently use the mounted backup solution, will you migrate me to the R1Soft solution?
A) There is no migration path to R1Soft CDP, it's a new solution so you just need to upgrade to R1Soft and remove your old solution.

Q) I don't want to switch but what if i need more disk space on my current backup solution?
A) The mounted backup solution is no longer being offered, you will need to switch the the R1Soft solution.

Q) How long do I have to decide if I want to change over?
A) A date has not been set however we are no longer offering the mounted backup solution and we do encourage that you look at migrating over as soon as possible. We will however give sufficient notice to our customers once the date has been set.

Q) How much RAM do I need to run the solution?
A) You will need a VPS with a minimum of 512MB RAM to accomodate the R1Soft Agent. It does

Q) This sounds like the solution i've been looking for but how much backup space do I need?
A) It depends on how much disk space you are currently using, an example is below:

Your current Windows 2008 install = 22GB
Incremental Daily backups = 250MB/Day

Total required = 22GB + 250MB x 7 Days = 23.75GB

** R1Soft will take incremental backups of ANY changes that are made on the VPS so you have to allow head room to ensure that you don't use all of your backup space **

Q) How can I check how much disk space i'm using?
A) Click on 'Start' > My computer then right click on C: and click on 'Properties'. This will display your current disk usage.

Q) So how much does it cost?
A) Pricing is below:

Q) Great, I need a good backup solution how do i sign up?
A) Simple, log in to the Manage Account Area of our website go to "My Services" and view the "Upgrade/Downgrade Options" link of your Windows VPS. You will see the R1Soft backup solution where you can then choose the appropriate amount of disk space and sign up.

1. Go to: Australian Web Hosting & Business Web Hosting – Crucial Paradigm Australia > Manage Account > My Services

2. Click on the icon in the column next to the 'Next Due Date' column.

3. Click on "Upgrade/Downgrade Options" and select the R1Soft backup option that you would like to add on to your VPS.

* Please check how much space you are currently using on your C Drive and ensure that you purchase sufficient backup space to accommodate the snap shots.
** Upgrades are usually completed within 1-2 business days, however can take slightly longer depending on the complexity of your upgrade, and capacity available at the time.

Just to confirm... you're only ceasing to offer the mounted backup solution, not actually removing that option for those who already use it?

Hey Craig,

Yes at this stage that is correct, we are no longer offering mounted space as a backup solution but at this stage it is not being removed from customers whom already use it. A decision is still to be made as to whether it will be removed entirely but it's looking like it will be at some stage.
