Default Recommended DNS TTL values

What are the recommended TTL values for DNS records. From what I have seen with other hosting companies is they tend to set the SOA to 86400 and the other records to 14400.

I have just noticed that when I created a new account all the records are set to 1000, perhaps something has gone a bit screwy there.

I understand what the TTL value does and the pros and cons of making it higher and lower just thought I would see what people tend to use. I think 14400 is pretty good as 4 hours is probably on the limit of acceptable if you need to make an emergency change.

Have a great long weekend!

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

We usually set a lower TTL in case you wish to transfer your account down the track, or in case of an emergency transfer. This means you would have a lot lower downtime than the 4 hours if we used 14400.

Keep in mind a lot of ISPs will cache even longer than what you set the TTL to, so we try and keep this low to prevent any potential downtime during transfers.
