Default Upgrading base ubuntu 9.04 image to karmic

Hi,

I have a VPS account with crucial and was wondering if there is anything special I need to do to upgrade to karmic as I had some problems when I attempted it yesterday.

After rebuilding from fresh I started uploading about 6gb of data to a holding folder (not overwriting any of the system config) while I started the do-release-upgrade process. After rebooting the server could not be raised (ping or ssh)

I just tried the process again and the same thing has happened (this time no copying files) - after the reboot there is no ping or ssh.

My specific process was as follows:
  • rebuild server with 9.04 x64
  • ssh in as root
  • change password
  • install screen (select screen theme)
  • run screen
  • apt-get install update-manager-core - throws an error about out of date sources
  • apt-get update
  • apt-get install update-manager-core
  • do-release-upgrade
  • type 'y' through the prompts (nothing exceptional) until it prompts for a reboot

Is there anything else I need to do to get it woring?

Hi adante,

Have you checked the output on the console, and troubleshooted the issue from the console of the VPS?

Thanks for the suggestion Aaron. The console had previously not worked for me so I didn't think to try this - learned helplessness I guess.

Console shows mounting problems most likely related to this bug. Obviously this is outside of the purview of these forums so I will take it elsewhere - that said I would still appreciate it if anybody else who has experienced/fixed this problem could provide advice.

Ok, I am not that familiar with xen virtualisation and the console log has me a little baffled.

Where does the host log stop and the guest log start?

Why is my kernel being reported as a xen kernel? Am I still in the host? If so why is my hostname mounted?

What does your /etc/fstab show ?

Note, you can check this in HyperVM under the File Manager. It should have /dev/sda1 for the / partition, however let me know what yours shows and we'll go from there.

I have not encountered that Ubuntu 9 error you have described in that link, so can't say if that is the error or not.

Those logs are the logs of the VPS booting up, nothing to do with the host node. By looking at the logs the VPS is actually starting up, which is a good sign. Might be a network issue you are facing....

A xen kernel is used on both the VPS and the host node.

Can you please type: ifconfig

And then: ping 203.98.84.243

And paste the results here (you can remove the last digit of your IP for your security).

Ok, thanks for clarifying. Do you know why my ubuntu karmic machine appear to be booting a centos xen kernel (excerpt from log)?

just to explicitly confirm, 'ifconfig' without arguments does return nothing.

Because the host node runs the CentOS Xen Kernel, and hence it starts the VPS with this kernel as well. This is nothing to worry about, and should not effect how your VPS runs.

Try configuring the network yourself using the following details:

interface: eth0
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Your IP: a.b.c.d
Gateway: a.b.c.1

Where a.b.c.d is the IP address assigned to your VPS.

Here is a guide which can help with this: Network Interface Configuration Using ifconfig -- Debian Admin

Ok, I am concerned that we are detracting from the main issue here. Network is down, yes, but the main filesystem is also failing to boot and dropping me into a maintenance shell.

I also remain a little skeptical about how a 2.6.18-128.1.16.el5xen can support ubuntu 9.10 which uses, as stock, a 2.6.31 kernel. I personally have experienced troubles running 9.10 (non virtualised) on kernels as 'old' as 2.6.26.
