Default FTP active mode on s456

Hi,

I can't get FTP active mode transfers to work on this server (203.98.75.57). Everything was okay last week. I've submitted a support ticket but responses are slow (6+ hours) and not helpful so far.

We need active mode because MS FTP.EXE doesn't do passive mode.

Has somebody added some unreasonable restrictions to the firewall ? If so, can they be relaxed for ftpd so my users can maintain their sites.

Cheers,

Hi Steven,

I've spoken with our Systems Administrator and no changes have been made on s456 that would effect FTP.

We don't usually recommend the use of MS FTP.EXE, we recommend using a full featured FTP client as MS FTP.EXE is not known to be very reliable.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for the reply. I understand your concern about ftp.exe but the problem also applies to any FTP client that requires active transfer mode (the FTP default). If the connection block isn't due to a firewall change could it be due to a network change (e.g. new routers).

The problem is easy to verify by just starting an FTP session and trying LS for example.

I have two clients who are furious and others that are patient so far. Yes, I have no problems (I use passive mode with encryption by default) but some users need active mode and change is not really an option. Some need ftp.exe for its batch mode operation capabilities and others use the FTP facilities provided by web design software.

My support ticket replies are very slow and the frustrating thing is that they don't seem to understand the problem.

Edit at 1846: Transfers now appear to be working. I've requested that my users test their links.

Edit next day: All seems okay. Problem solved.

Thanks,
