Question Website + Game Server?

I was hoping I could configure CPanel to allow my website (stored at crucial) and my game server (stored on my local machine) to run at the same time (through the same domain).

At the moment, the website is working fine but the game server doesn't. From what I understand, I need to use an A Record for my domain to point to my computers IP... I can't find this option in CPanel?

I might be able to resolve the issue by using the URL redirect feature and having a domain like game.domain.com or domain.com/game but I was hoping to avoid that. I would prefer users to join the game just by entering the domain.com

Running the web-server and game server from my local local machine had worked fine in the past. I had the domain registrar pointing to my IP using A Records.

Is what I am asking possible with CPanel - are there other options I might be missing?

Hi Poglet,

In your cPanel control panel there should be a DNS edit option. Where you can make such changes.

However just a note, there are a few different records, there is the www cname record which affects what IP people are directed too when they use www.mydomain.com, then there is the A record for mydomain.com.

If you change the A record for mydomain.com anytime people goto http://mydomain.com they will be redirected to that IP. Instead of your website. Your website will only load on www.mydomain.com.

I would suggest creating a subdomain record for something like server.mydomain.com

Hey Ross,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortuantly I never ended up getting either option to work.

Last week I purchased another domain through gandi.net and signed up for the the free hosting opting that Crucial are now providing. The automated email I received tells me that if had of purchased a domain with Crucial it will propagate and I can access the cpanel and ftp etc by entering the domain name in instead of the IP.

How can this be done with my existing domain?

(I have checked the tutorials and knowledge base here and at gandi with no success)

Hi poglet,

I wasn't 100% sure on what you were asking.

If you wish to access your cPanel of a hosting account with us you have two ways you can do this.

You can access it via the Temporary cPanel URL listed in the Welcome email, or you can access it via yourdomain.com/cpanel

For the second option to work your domain name must already point to the name servers we have provided with your hosting account. The name server details are provided in your Welcome email (same email with login details to your cPanel hosting account).

If you have a domain name purchased through Crucial and wish to change the name servers, this can be done by logging into the Manage Account area via crucial.com.au, and going to your domain name, then editing the Name server settings there.

Note, changing name servers can take upto 48 hours to take affect.

Its free web hosting, which means you need to create the website yourself. If you don't know much about creating websites, there are a few people who will be able to assist you on these forums.
