Default SSL Install on VPS

I have a linux cloud VPS, and a newbie

Currently using it for one web hosted domain.

Need to use SSL certifcate on that one web hosted domain

It appears you can install the SSL certificate on both/either the WHM cPanel for the entire VPS, and also in the individual cPanel for the hosting domain account

I'm a bit lost as to which one to setup the SSL on, the VPS WHM cPanel, or the Hosted dmain account cPanel

Hi dereko,

First thing you are best to make sure your domain has its own IP address, as you may encounter issues otherwise. Second you just want to setup SSL for that particular domain. You can have SSL for WHM/cPanel as a whole (this will make it so you are able to use SSL while logging into WHM/cPanel), however this is different to SSL on just your domain.

Thanks Aaron

I have a second IP address I ordered when I ordered the VPS server

All I want is for it to work on the hosted domain, so I guess I generate the csr from the hosted domains cPanel directly then?

I have installed an existing cert on that domain, but it's not working, and I can't seem to remove it from the SSL management panel? I think I may have originally generated the csr from the VPS WHM cPanel, could his be the problem?

If you have installed and existing cert (that was working previously), you need to make sure you use the original CSR, and RSA generated for that certificate. If you don't have those, you will need to generate a new CSR and RSA, order an SSL certificate, and then install it using the CSR, RSA, and certificate you have.

Hope this helps!

Hi Aaron

I don't know the existing certificate previously worked as I had never used it.

I think I may have generated the csr from the VPS WHM panel, not the actual domain cPanel, would this cause the problem?

I also can't see any reference to the second IP in the domain cPanel SSL manager, yet I can in the VPS WHM cPanel

Also, when trying to delete the existing certificate, it says deleted, but when i go back into SSL manager it's still there

Have you purchased the certificate from an external source, or are you trying to use one generated by cPanel? If you use one generated by cPanel all your users accessing the site will get a warning that it is not an official certificate. While this is unrelated, I thought it might help!

Hi Aaron

Yes I realise that

It's a third party SSL certificate purchased via godaddy from RapidSSL.

They have them on special for $14 AUD, unfortunetly crucial charge $99 for the same thing

No worries, it should still work. You can generate the CSR from either WHM or cPanel, probably WHM would be slightly more reliable. If you install the cert then you probably want to do it from WHM, and you will need to first put the domain on the dedicated IP for it to work correctly.
